An alternate method for finding TDC for #1 cylinder is to remove the spark plugs from cylinders 2, 3, and 4 leaving the plug in #1. When you get to the compression stroke, the engine will be harder to turn over. I normally don't have help so this method works well. You can also line up the mark easier if you're slowly pulling the engine over by the fan blades. Line up the pointer to the first of the double marks on the crank pulley. FYI, the slot in the mag drive looking from the oil filter will be in line with the 2- and 8 o'clock positions with the stamped part number on the lower portion. One other comment: The impulse will trip each half-revolution so if you want to verify the impulse timing, you'll hear a click each time the TDC mark matches the pointer. One time it will be for cylinder #1 and the other will be for cylinder #4.
