You should first warm the motor up, by running it. Then you should remove the valve cover. Next note how two pushrods at a time are up (out of the 8 pushrods) and the other six are down. You will need to check the tappet clearence when the valves are down, so first do the six that are down, then rotate the engine by turning the fan so that the two "up" ones go down, and you can check them too. The gap should be .017" when Hot, so take a .017 feeler gage and slip it between the rocker arm and the valve. It should be a snug (not tight and not loose) fit. If it is not this way, it will probably be too loose. To fix this, each rocker arm has a screw on one end. Loosen the setscrew for this screw (I think the setscrew is 1/2 or 9/16) and turn the screw in to take up slack or out to create slack. Then tighten the setscrew again, while holding the screw itself stationary with a screwdriver. Do this to all 8 valves. Then you are set to go!
