You guys finally got a picture of something in my real area of expertise! To answer the question about commutator bars-there aren't any. This is a rotor for a power plant generator. In these generators, the field rotates.A dc excitation voltage is applied to the rotor and the generated ac power is drawn off the stator windings. The alternator in your car or tractor works the same way except the stator current is sent through a 3 phase rectifier and changed to dc to provide charging current. The field supply is connected to the rotor through slip rings and brushes. The brushes need to be maintained as they would in a dc machine. We have a large generator with the same type of rotor in it as the one pictured. It is capable of generating 28 megawatts at 13800vac.I change the brushes in this generator on a regular basis and believe it or not,it is ON LINE when I change them.
