I don't have any firsthand experience with smaller alternator conversions - I've only ever seen one H with a smaller alternator installed. But here's a few thoughts anyway: 1 - Denny's Carb Shop ads in the old iron magazines show a "mini alternator" for conversions. However it is EXPENSIVE - around $175 if I recall. 2 - A lot of the high end commercial lawn mowing machines (Deere, etc) have water-cooled engines equipped with small Denso alternators. You could purchase and adapt one of those. But it will likely cost as nearly much as #1 above. 3 - Pay a visit to your local starter/alternator shop and tell 'em what you are looking for. They should know what alternators are physically smallest, and probably have a few rebuilds in stock. They can probably also offer advice on wiring, regulators, etc. Price should be a lot less than #1 and #2. 4 - Visit your local auto scrapyard. Peer under the hood of some foreign cars (also late model small domestic cars such as the Ford Escort). Look for a small alternator with a V belt (not serpentine) belt drive, or with a replaceable drive pulley. This option is cheapest but will require some research to figure out the wiring. Keep in mind most any alternator you turn up will probably use metric fasteners (pivot and tension bolts, output terminal, etc). Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind when you make mounting brackets, wiring connections, etc. If you do make a conversion, please share what you did when it is completed!
