If you leave your heater on all the time during winter you will 'burn' the ethylene glycol in your antifreeze causing it to become acidic and slowly eat away at your rad. These heater elements get quite hot, hotter in fact than the cylinder wall, gylcols cann't take that high a temp without degrading into acidic components. The circulating types are far superior to the frost plug style. Where I live we regularly get temps below 0 F. However the choice is yours.
