I have read all three posts, and I know it was a lot of money in 1957. However we were better off back then. Some great fortunes were ammased by farmers in the business starting right after WW2. They maybe didn't have a lot at the time, but the items they acumilated in the 40s, 50s and 60s became a fortune in the year 2000. In 1950 my dad was milking 15 cows, by 1960 he was milking 40. During that decade he built a 50 cow tie stall barn, bought a Farmall H, 300, and 130. By the end of the decade he had his second baler a Super 69 NH with thrower and a NH 460 9' mower conditioner. He also bought a 51, 55, 57 and 59 Chevys. All these things were bought new, and his only debt at 1960 was the barn and some additional land. Ah my friends, money went a long way back then. You could buy a new pair of work boots for $2.25. I remember a neighbour, never worked at anything in his life but piece work in the forest industry with a chain saw. He got married, built a new house, raised 4 children and bought a new Buick (full size) every 2-3 years. His wife never had to work outside the home. He did not come from a monied family either. Try that one today and you would starve to death.

And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th
