Thanks for your comments.

The possibilty the head was milled strikes me as logical to cause an increase in compression. However the engine has had very light duty since new.

In my 25 years of ownership, the head (or anything else on the engine except points, plugs and ignition wires) has never been touched.

The previous owner (and original purchaser) was a school in a small town. It was used only for mowing by them, so it was light duty there. I suppose there is a possibility the school messed up the engine somehow and had to have the head worked on before I got it.

Next week I will be talking with the mechanic who used to work for me and recommended I by the tractor 25 years ago. He said then it was a good deal, and he has obviously been right. Since he lived in the small town where the tractor was and knew the sellers, I will ask him if the head had any work on it.

Understand I am NOT complaining about the tractor in any way, shape or form! I am happy to have it and take good care of it.

It is just that when I tested the compression I fully expected the psi to be lower than spec. The fact it is so much higher than spec really surprised me and I really would like some opinions on why this is so.

To sum up: Your comments all make sense and I thank you. Rest assured I will not pull the head to take a look see. It runs great so leave it alone!

Thanks to all of you.
Mark

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
