We had a table type buss saw, the kind with the flywheel on it. It was used for years with no problems, but one day when my dad and uncle were sawing wood the flywheel split right in half. One chunck of the flywheel hit my dad(who was tailing the saw)in the head ubove the left eye. The force carried him 30 feet from the saw. This was in 1962 before EMT's and real ambulance service in our small town. The local undertaker ran the ambulance in town but wasn't home so the pastor of our church ended up driving it because he lived next door. When tthey got my dad to the local hospital he was given 15 minutes to live and sent on to a big hospital. They arrived a half hour later, he was in a coma for three days. The plate they put in his skull was made by an oral surgon because there was no one else at the hospital with the skills. My dad just turned 81 last fall he still get out and cuts firewood but with a chainsaw. I was 6 years old the day this happened and saw everthing, nothing was ever quite the same again on the farm. I have a brother who still milks cows at home. In looking at the flywheel there had been a hairline crack in it for some time on one had noticed.
