Joe, I just had the same problem with a Farmall B I am restoring. I used paint remover on it, but it also takes some of the original black paint off the serial plate. I also used paint remover on the starter and generator plates. I like the 3M paint stripper as it is water base and seems to work well to remove paint without any stink. I think if you don't leave the paint stripper on too long it may help with not removing the black original paint. Roger
