I believe the oil bath air cleaner to be the most efficient available. They are not used on newer equipment solely to keep costs down. The manufacturers don't mind making you buy replacement cartridges if it saves them a few dollars. You don't have 50 yr old tractors still running very well if they were equipped with a poor air filter. These filters still do a good job with poor maintenance, they filter air long after a paper element would be clogged and full of holes. Don't think they are not good just because they are old. Oil bath air filters were used on big trucks until just a few years ago. PS I am a mechanical engineer and this is my professional opinion.
