Since you're getting to the desperation point, I'll tell you what the problem turned out to be when I had similar symptoms. Turned out the *!%$@ that rebuilt the carburetor hadn't put in the packing that goes around the main jet screw, and the screw was loose enough that it got sucked inwards shutting off the fuel flow. Pretty far-fetched, I know, but it's a true story - might be worth a look to make sure something similar isn't happening in your case.
