Yes, it must be free to spin. This is one of the problems caused by substituting grease for the proper lube in the gear box. Heat will destroy the important seal, but you will probably need a new one any way (CR8677 or CR545294). Be careful to not break the flange, but you should be able to drive the shaft through the flange, or at least loosen it by driving. The worm is permanently fastened to the shaft. George Willer
