A common mistake many people do is that they substitute 12 volt battery cables for the existing 6 volt cables. Six volt cables are heavier and have less voltage drop at the higher currents. Check your cables first - ensure they are the nice heavy cables you would find in a 6 volt system. While doing this, clean all connections completely. If the ground cable is bolted to the frame, undo this bolt and clean everything. The tractor frame. The cable terminal. The bolt. Hidden corrosion is the usual culbrit. One last thing to look at is the starter itself. You might have worn brushes or bad bearings. Two other items: Yes, 8 volt batteries do exist. As you've found, locating a charger for them is more difficult. Finally, converting to 12 volts is no big deal. I would not do it simply to mask another problem, though.
