I have a 544 gas tractor that I fiddle with all the time. The engine really needs a rebuild by now, but I was thinking about putting a diesel engine in instead. I just replaced the clutch and the PTO, and everything inside looks pretty good, so I hate to get rid of the tractor, but I don't want to keep on with the gas tractors. Our diesels run so much better, with so much better fuel efficiency and less fiddling. I just don't have time to deal with things on an ongoing basis now, so I'd like to do one conversion, and know that it's going to last a long time (otherwise I'll sell the tractor, but it won't be for much as compared to getting a new used diesel from around this area in that 45-50 hp range) Has anyone done anything like this? Is it a horrible idea? The gas engine is rated at... I think 50 hp... What engine would I use to replace what's in there now? Where do I find it? I'm pretty handy at figuring things out, but... I've never done anything like this before. Any help would be very appreciated
