Have a '57 TA350 gas tractor. While running, I heard a funny noise in the starter area. I quickly killed the engine. Upon trying to restart the engine, the battery cable got very hot. I removed the starter and checked it with booster cables to see if it was shorted. It turns ok. My question: Is the bendix spring loaded to pull the teeth back out of the flywheel after the engine starts or does centrifugal force do it? It is a Delco-Remy starter. I would really appreciate if anyone had a parts breakdown of the starter I could get to take it apart for troubleshooting. Thank you for any response.
