Set the volt meter for the correct DC range and attach the leads to the battery observing polarity. (red to +, black to -) Note voltage. A fully charged 6 volt battery at rest will read 6.3 volts; a fully charged 12 volt will read 12.6 volts. Start the engine and see if the voltage increases from where it was. Charging voltage for a 6 volt system should be in the 6.8 - 7.2 range. Charging voltage for a 12 volt system should be in the 13.8 - 14.4 range. Colder temps should cause a higher reading than hot summer temps.
