On those Kohler engines, they have a history of exhaust valve problems. They run very hot and tend to stick in the open position. One of the ways to control it is with Marvel Mystery Oil. Not just in the crankcase, but also some in the fuel. Works like a charm too. Very different animal from the engine on a tractor. On your 400LP, you probably wouldn't have much need for it, since LP burns so clean anyway.
