John, it is more normal that there would be some carbon on top of a piston as not. We use "Cleens" ,a fuel system cleaner available at Carquest that we run through the carb as the engine fast idles, it does a good job of cleaning up carbon..I'm sure there are many other products of that nature but I can vouch for this one ..it does remove the carbon.....Mike in Exeter Ontario
