Make sure the cylinder that you are adjusting the valves is on compression stroke top dead center. I use a .018 feeler gauge for cold settings. The feeler gauge should be placed between the adjustable tappet and the end of the valve stem. Just loosen the locking nut and adjust the tappet with a screwdriver until the feeler gauge is just getting tight but still removable. Then lock down the locking nut while keeping a screwdriver in the tappet slot so it does not tighten on you.
