If your tractor has a magneto (I think all MDs originally had mags), it sounds like you have it 180 degrees out of time. The magneto only has two lobes on the breaker points cam, so it has to have gearing to change the speed 2X to make it work for 4 cylinders. The cam in the mag makes two turns for each one turn of the rotor. Thus if you had the mag off the tractor rotated the coupling of the mag drive 1 full turn when you had it off, it is 180 degrees out of time. You don't have to take the whole mag off, you can just take the front off the rotor drive and turn the rotor a half turn and put it back on. Don't ask how I know this, but I can tell you if it is 180 degrees out, it will try to run, but will backfire and blow the oil back out of the breather.
