A picture would help. An H or M will have plates on both sides of the block, the one on the right exposes the pushrod area, the one on the left is a water jacket cover. I believe this is true of the W9 also. I don't think the A,B,C, engine has any such covers. There should be a machined surface under the #1 spark plug that has a number -- the prefix to that number will be an indication. Also, there should be a part number cast into the block, that should still be there. If the block is off an F series, someone else will have to guess. The IH engines referred to have the dist or mag on the right, carb on the left.
