Seems like you can get about as many opinions on this as the number of people consulted, but I'm in agreement with you - a SuperM with the high compression pistons was NOT designed to be cranked very long on six volts!! A six-volt system in GOOD condition is at best marginal for cranking these beasties when it's cold outside. I've gone the 8 volt route; it's adequate, no more. A friend of mine used to work at Delco-Remy in Anderson, Indiana, where a majority of the GM (and old IH) starters were made. When GM started producing some diesel engines for cars in the 70's by converting gasoline engines, there were problems cranking them. According to him, the difficulty was solved by tooling up an old section of the 6-volt starter line and putting 6-volt armatures in otherwise 12-volt starters. That provided the extra torque to move those ill-fated attempts at cheap diesels. I don't doubt one bit that your starter lasted almost 25 years under a 12-volt battery. Those starters are TOUGH!
