Dan, Both steel and paper pulleys were available, however most farmers prefered the paper pulley as when dressed it held the belt better than steel, which in turn caused the belt to track better. The hood decals on your 42 H would have had FARMALL and directly above had McCormick Deering. The IH logo didnt appear until after the war, which would have been 1945 and later. At that time the Deering name was removed also and only McCormick appeared over the FARMALL name.
