I probably had as much time driving a tractor when I was young as any one. Unfortunately in similar circumstances at that age I might have done the same thing; ie, raced the ATV. No doubt the rider enticed him. However, I would hope with having had experience maneuvering in tight quarters, that I would not have clipped the ATV and would have avoided running off the road. Spatial awareness has to be learned. The root problem is that kids believe they are indestructible and nothing can go wrong, and since the tractor was outside it's normal operating environment, they may temporarily "forget" or abandon what they have learned. A few words or a reminder from my parents (not necessarily unkind) before departing with the tractor would have been beneficial.
