I don't know of a place to purchase the connector you want, but in the olden days, these were called "Rawhide Dowells". We used them on belts in cotton gins in the south. The dowells came in lengths of about one foot and were made of rawhide. They were about 1/8" in diameter. A good old fashioned hardware supplier might have them. Obviously, you can see how they would fit into the belt laces.
