White smoke generally means burning oil, black smoke means you're running rich. Since engine was once frozen, I'd guess the rings are no longer seating against the cylinder walls as well as they once did. New rings and honing the cylinder walls should fix you up. Yes, new sleeves would be great, but I stopped an old engine from smoking by doing just this. If you do this, might as well have the head done over while its off. At that time, I suppose you'll know for sure if you need new sleeves or just a quick hone. Good luck.
