James, when Bob M gets here he probably has a Wiring Diagram to tell ya EXACTLY how to wire it, but I will wing it strictly on theory till he arrives.

First off I wonder of that VR is a 3 wire (BAT ARM FLD terminals) or a 4 wire (BAT ARM FLD LOAD)??? Can you see any markings or labels on or near its terminals?????? Does it have 3 or 4 terminals???? I say maybe 4 wire due to BOTH a 10 and 12 Gauge wire you mentioned. Often a 3 wire VR just has one wire up to the dash from the VR"s BAT terminal to the dash ammeters Load terminal is why I ask.

Heres some theoretical "best guesses" as I have no diagram either:

4 WIRE VR (BAT ARM FLD LOAD)

a) The 10 and 12 Gauge wires. See if either (when removed from VR) always reads hot battery voltage??? If one does and NOT the other, my guess is the one with HOT battery voltage wires to the ammeters Load (NOT to battery/starter) side terminal and the other NOT HOT wires to the BAT input terminal on a switch to feed power for lights etc.

b) BAT on VR would wire up to the Ammeters Load (NOT to battery/starter) side terminal, and my best guess is that would be whichever wire (10 or 12) coming down from the dash that always reads HOT battery voltage.

LOAD wires up to the BAT input terminal on the switch to feed voltage for lights etc. It would be whichever wire (10 or 12) coming down from the dash thats NOT HOT when not wired to the VR.

FLD on the VR wires to the Generators Field post, it may be the smaller of the 2 Gen posts.

ARM (or GEN) on the VR may be the one of to the side or bottom all by itself. it wires to teh Gens Armature (larger) post.

The HOT/NOT HOT test should best define the 10 or 12 Gauge wire, but if not for that, I would guess the larger 10 is the one to the ammeter and the 12 is to the switch to supply voltage OF ITS A 4 WIRE VR

3 WIRE VR (BAT ARM FLD)

BAT on VR wires to the wire (10 OR 12) down from dash THATS ALWAYS HOT.

ARM (or GEN) on VR to Gens Arm post

FLD on VR to Gens Field post

The unknown (10 or 12) left over wire thats NOT always hot when not hooked to the VR, may get also wired to BAT on the VR (see below)


NOTES: See which wire (10 or 12) down from the dash is always HOT, if so thats the one to wire to the VR's BAT terminal, regardless if a 3 or 4 wire VR.

See if the Gens posts are labeled ARM and FLD??? If not, the larger is ARM and smaller the FLD if one even happens to be diferent size,

Sometimes on a 4 wire VR the ARM terminal wires to the VR underneath or one side by itself, look n see if any such wires or connectiosn now exist. If you find one such and the VR still has 3 other terminals all together, its likely a 4 wire VR wired as posted above.

If no lights etc work until you jump hot voltage to the unknown (10 or 12) dash wire, thats the wire that needs to be fed from the VR's Load terminal.

ITS ALSO POSSIBLE the unknown wire to the dash might also wire to the VR's BAT terminal to get voltage to feed lights INSTEAD OF it wiring to the ammeters load terminal (same point electrically). Ive seen that when a 4 wire VR was replaced with only a 3 wire. ITS POSSIBLE??
