The H originally was 6-Volt Positive Ground; however it may have been changed during its life. The smoking is coming from a loose battery connection, a heavy load, (possibly the starter has the drive jammed into the flywheel ring gear preventing the starter from turning) or it could also be a starter that has a shorted out armature or field windings. If it is only smoking when you try to run the starter, the starter and related wirings are the place to start. One thing you need to do thought is polarize the generator to make sure that it is set up for positive ground and check to make sure that the – terminal on the coil (only if you have a distributor) is connected to the switch. The ammeter may read backwards (shows a charge when you turn on the lights with the engine off) if the polarity is not right, but nothing else on a stock H will be affected if the ground was changed from positive to negative.
