In Reply to: Farmall 100 Hi-Clearance Serial Plate with FAA on? posted by Robert Cash Moline on February 26, 2006 at 18:22:00:

Went by the hi-clearance tractor today and on the left front side of bell housing there is a metal tag they missed first time and can not read it all, but it has -----HC and under that serial # 1453J, and under that 1575 rpm. This is the original tag. We asked on some of the other good points people brought up and the long time owner said he had seat and frame replaced approx. 7 years ago. He could not remember if he changed the front grill.

So maybe it is a 1954 Farmall 100 HC. I understand the 100 and 130 serial plate was on the bell housing. Is HC then the high clearance I assume. J means Rockford Clutch I have understood in the past. The key exactly to the model is finding out what those numbers read before the HC as you may know. Right now when looking at it in person we think we can see a 1 and a 0 but woulnd't swear to it. I do know there is a company that can read old serial tags using some sort of device and looking at the plate from the other side if taken off the tractor, and assuming the stamp depth was normal. Probably uses metal density somehow since they can read them even though you can't see anything on most other plates bottom side.

The owner we also found out today bought the tractor from first owner, as far as he knows it has not been modified. He did tell us about the seat and mount today and that the right distance-housing from the transmission to final drive was changed out. He said the mechanic that changed it said it is off 140 he remembered.

A Farmall person we showed this data and some casting #'s to said it sounds to them like we have a 100 HC bell housing & engine put onto a Super A or AV rear end (it was not uncommon to have trans or final drive problems on these - someone prob'ly replaced a "bad" rear end or busted final drive) We found some casting #'s and his date guess as the ones we sent him were a 5.23.W (ie 1951) on the trans. housing and the 9.7.2 on the engine (1954). All the other no's we found so far were just part numbers he told us. And alot are the same for SA thru 130 , & some parts of 140's were also the same. He thinks the serial number from seeing all the pictures and this info now will be a 100 HC. The only no's before the HC would be either 100 or 130 he feels, and the Z (1954) on the engine says it's a 100. (and there should also be a date on the bell housing - a Z here would mean for sure it's a 100 ). Haven't looked for that yet. At any rate it's still a partial mix but the important parts seem to be there or most of them so that is 3/4 of the battle.

I'm finding out alot of good information and appreciate everyones help. See the link below for the picture of the bell housing tag. Thank you.

Today's Featured Article - George's Fordson Major - by Anthony West (UK). This is a bit of a technical info to add on to the article about George's Major in the "A Towny Goes Plowing" article. George bought his Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00. There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken by Harold alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that the major was produced late 19 ... [Read Article]
