You may find rings and a valve job do the trick without sleeves and pistons. But then I always do a half-way job and am rarely disappointed with the results. My tractors get worked. I can plan to tear an engine down again if it means saving $1,000 on a shoddy half-way fix. Some people's time is very valuable, therefore they are rich. They can afford to spend an extra couple of thousand dollars to avoid a couple of days work so they "do it right" the first time. I do measure everything but rarely do the tolerances meet factory specifications. I've never thrown a rod or spun a bearing by putting new bearings on lightly worn but grooved journals. I won't feel like a total idiot if I ever have to tear an engine down prematurely. I believe I fix 80% of what is wrong with an engine for 20% of the cost of "making it like new" and experience proves it out.
