Pat - The quick answer is yes. There must be a resistor in series with the field ciruit in order to provide a "low" charge rate. However if your H has a voltage regulator the "low - high" charge function is being controlled automatically by the regulator. Note there's a LOT of tractors out there that have had their OEM cutouts replaced by voltage regulators. The field resistor is then typically abandoned in place - or removed entirely - as it no longer serves any function.
