I believe there were actually two different styles of -X20 tractors made. It sounds like yours was originally set up for a High Drum Cotton Picker. It will have a normal tranny top and drive forwards like all regular M's. When it was used under a mounted Cotton Picker, it had drop boxes, like those on the MV or F-20's, bolted to teh fluted axle shafts. Unlike the MV, these drop boxes actually reverse the tractors direction. In addition to the drop boxes, the tractor would have a 20-inch front single wheel and extended fork. Now, the other style was used under a low-drum picker. these had the standard axles, just like allother M's. To do the direction reversal, the differential/ring gear assembly was rotated such that the ring gear was on the left side. This would interfere with the shifting rails, so a special tranny top was used that moved the shifter to the right side, and had special shift rails and forks. It is becoming popular to take a tractor like you have, with the fluted axles and drop downs, and add the resersible tranny top to make a faux-MV. It will look like an MV at a distance, but will not be one. Any questions? Hope this helps.
