Tie Rod or Welded Cyl. for my Loader??

I need to replace the welded single 18 inch stroke dump cylinder on my Koyker loader on my 656. Would a tie rod replacement cyl. with the same stroke be just as good? Both kinds are available. Which should I buy and why?
