Once you feel compression against your thumb drop a large handle screwdriver onto the top of the piston. Big enough handle so you don't lose it. Have someone slowly hand crank the engine as you watch the screwdriver rise. When it quits rising you should be at TDC on the compression stoke on No1 piston. There are several ways to verify that. Your rotor whether its a mag or distributor should be at the No1 plug tower. Both valves on No1 piston should be closed too. I would mark that damper pulley and make a pointer so you don't need to stand on your head looking for the timing mark on the flywheel. Hal
