Thanks again to Hugh, Glenn, Nalens and all else who helped me with this problem.
Got my manifold gaskets today (I sat on the front door waiting for the Fed Ex man), and went out to work. Got the broken gasket replaced so she wasn't shoving exhaust into the adjacent intake port. Cleaned and gapped the plugs, and last week got the valves all adjusted to specs.
She fired right up and sounds better than when I got her! I went through the fuel system, replaced the points, condensor and coil, all before I got a look at the push rods under the valve cover. What I didn't post earlier was that I am used to car engines. One manifold for intake, and one for exhaust. So after replacing all the above, and straightening the push rods, I couldn't figure out why she was running even worse. Sitting there and staring at it for 30 minutes, it started to dawn on me that the carb was attached to the manifold. Hmmm. Finally realizing that the right side of the engine had no manifold, I discovered the intake portion of the single manifold. I had put the manifold back on (still not mentally connecting the carb being attached as important) with the broken gasket thinking what the hey, so it will be a little loud and smelly, but should run now that the rods were straight.
Well, suffice to say that replacing that gasket was the final piece to the puzzle and she is running like a top. So, should someone post here in the future about losing power on their 4 banger gas engine, I'll tell them to check fuel and spark first, but if that don't do it, you can bet I'm going to jump right to telling them to pull the valve cover next.
