Just thinking out loud here Mike, since I sure don't know for sure(because it'll be years till I'm old enough to attain "crusty ol' bugger" status-haha)....
But are you sure that there was actually silver colored paint on those emblems to begin with? In my own mind, what I'd do if restoring one of them(and again I could be wrong since all of 'em I've been around personally are rust-colored) is to glassbead the whole thing to where it's a satin-silver finish, then just paint in the black part...and either leave it like that or possibly clear-coat it to protect the bare areas....
If you're bound and determined to use both silver and black paint, you could always just paint one color on it, then the next day send the wife out shopping and pop the thing in the oven for a couple hours to bake that paint totally dry before adding the contrasting color....might wanna whip up a batch of brownies afterwards to mask the smell tho...
