Mifsud: First off, cann that one wire alternator idea. Personally I'd take the current harness apart wire by wire and make my own new harness. It is one of the well paying chores in restoring an old tractor.

I'm a bit like gene with some differences. I'll never convert another C-113 or C-123 engine tractor to 12 volt from 6 volt. I will convert 6 volt generators to 6 volt alternators. In fact the very next time my 130 or 140 give electrical trouble they are going to once again become 6 volt tractors. I converted my SA and 130 to alternator in 1992, SA is 6 volt alternator, 130 is 12 volt alternator. The SA has been completely trouble free since that time. I installed a new 6 volt battery when I did the 6 volt alternator conversion, and that 6 volt battery lasted 13 years. I have never had a battery come close to that many years service before.

In 2002 we added the 140 to our tractor line up, and since electrical was screwed up we turned it into 12 volt alternator, giving us 2 - 12 volt tractors and 5 times the electrical problems. 130 is on it's 4 th battery and second alternator since 1992. I can see 140 will need a new battery come spring. I recently had the 130 starter go bad. I took it to an automotive electrical rebuilder. He pulled it apart and said, "You have this tractor on 12 volt and that is the problem. The starter has spun too fast, too often, thus centrifical force dislodged the armature whindings. The starter drive has never failed, it's just that these little engines crank too easy, thus over speeding starter." He went on to tell me he never sees this problem in big tractors. A new armature and $217. later my tractor is starting. Just my latest experience.
