John The H and M transmissions were very similar in overall speed ratios. The tractor speeds at about 1500 RPM are: 1st-2.5 mph, 2nd-3.5 mph, 3rd-4.25 mph, 4th-5.125 mph, 5th-16 mph. An aftermarket or optional gear ratio kit was available to increase the 4th gear speed to 7 mph for various farming applications. 4th gear was to slow for a travel speed and 5th gear was a road gear. As is common on most older tractors, high gear is obviously not a working gear and is not progressive in the shift pattern for travel speed increases. In my experience or comparision of old 35 to 40 HP M's and new John Deere tractors in the 70 to 100 HP range (equivalent weight for both tractors), the pulling speed must be reduced by 50 to 60% for a 50% decrease in horsepower. My son and I did tests in a grain field using a 9' offset wheel disc. The 1947 M (35-40 HP) pulled the implement at 2.25 mph and the 1977 John Deere 2640 (70 HP) pulled the same disc at 5 mph. The 1997 John Deere 6410 (85-90 HP) ran with the disc at over 6.5 mph. Ray For all of the farmers on this forum, the soil was dry sandy loam during the hot summer months.
