I have to disagree with Jim. You should use HYD/TRANS in the trans/diff. The diff and Trans are interconnected so use same oil. The actual amount of HYD/TRANS fluid for the trans and diff can be different.
424s with constant running pto use 13 gals vs. live pto which uses, i believe, 5 gals. (I don"t have my owners manual with me, so am going off memory.)
The proper level is approx 6 inches from the top of the filler plug located on the trans gear plate. The plugs on the side are not used to determine fill level. A common misconception that I fell for also. There are two drain plugs on the bottom of each trans and diff eventhough they both drain the same fluid.
The plug at the right rear of the seat is for the hydraulic resevoir. There should also be a drain plug there also. There will still be a little left in there if you decide to replace the filter located at the right front of the resevoir. It also uses HYD/Trans fluid. It holds approx. 3 gals.
