Since you are not feeling any detent when shifting into gear the range transmission cover and the linkage under it is good place to start. Most likely you have a broken roller allowing the detent spring to fall off. If the reverse lever moves in the cover rather than just turning you may need a rebuilt cover.
There may be too much wear in the linkage at the shift lever. As the reverse and high low lever wear on the sleeve they are mounted on they start to twist rather than just rotate on the sleeve. This can cause quite a bit of lost movement at the shift cover.
Check the rest of the external linkage for lost movement. A little extra play in a few places starts to add up.
