My Cub "popped" when an exhaust valve would stick. When it was completely stuck it would pop at regular intervals...then it became intermittant...then it finally stopped as the valve progressivly loosened up. Try this...with the engine at a low idle, place a gloved hand over the exhaust. Normally with the firing of each cylinder, your hand will be blown away from the exhaust. If however it gets sucked in once in a while, your valve is sticking. I think in my case, the pop was from the uncompressed gas/air mixture either being ignited by the spark plug or from the exhaust from other cylinders. Let us know what you find out....Binder.
