You can weld them. I have ran my SMTA for over 5 years welded on. It is my tractor pulling tractor so it really gets fatigued going 70 mph down the freeway on teh trailer.
Super Missle rod is the way to go. High nickel rod with preheat is 10+ year old technology. There are a lot better ways to go than that now days. If you are near Elkhorn, WI I had RC Welding do my SMTA.
I would buy a pipe and slit it a couple times and try to clean up the hole before I went welding it.
