The TA lever releases the front TA disk clutch. If the TA is needing adjustment, one symptom is that the regular foot clutch pedal fails to move the TA clutch to the release position (which it should) when the foot pedal is pushed in just a little farther than the point at which the main clutch stops driving the wheels. When this happens, the power train can, and does, put pressure on that TA clutch in a reverse direction. This force is transferred from that clutch to the TA body, which cannot be turned backwards because there is a sprague or "one way" ramp and roller device (also called a clutch) which locks up in that direction. If the tractor is in a forward gear, and the land slopes rearward, the drive train will feel like it is binding. The gears will be nearly impossible to shift, and the tractor will not roll rearward. If it is in reverse, the tractor will feel like it is hanging and unable to roll forward. Clear indication of improperly adjusted TA. Also hard on shifting mechanisms, and gear teeth if forced out of gear. If this is it, adjust the TA There are many references in the archives from Me and the Tractor vet and others describing the essence. Manuals can be very effective if the pivot pins and linkages are not sloppy. If they are, repair as needed. At least it is not broken, and easy to fix from the outside standing up!! Jim.
