Ah yes true the current is less, but is not the motor spinning faster due to the voltage being double? Would this not double (at least) your heat due to friction in the bearings, and where the teeth engage the flywheel? Yes any starter will over heat if run "too long" but with a 12v system on a 6v starter it seems that "too long" would be less long.
