$350 Cub Starting....... Again.

What might have happened ?

Tractor did not run when I bought it. Original owner was part way through a 12 volt conversion. I finished it with the help of Bob M’s article. The tractor turned over fine but did not start. I didn’t really expect it to but it would have been nice.

With the advice from additional posting from this site I have put in new plugs, wires and checked the compression. Lowest is 60 highest is 80. I know this is low but a least there is compression. I also thought maybe because I was testing a cold engine I might get higher readings when it was warmed up. More wishful thinking ? I have not gone through the distributor yet only because I have a good spark from the plugs. I tried starting the tractor again with the new stuff and it still didn’t start. Smelled like a flooded car so I took out the plugs and they were wet and I mean wet. Let it dry out for a while tried it again and it sounded like it tried to fire just for a second. Added a little more gas but the battery went dead. I assume from cranking and it’s not new.

With renewed ambition from a close call I took the air hose off the carb and all the gas I had added came pouring out. I took this as good news thinking now all I had to do was fix the float to stop the gas overflow and I’d be in business. Took the carb off and apart and the float needle was stuck and the inside of the carb looked like it had been filled with water and crudded up. Cleaned it out reinstalled poured in new gas pulled the rod it turned over several times and then acted like the battery went dead again. I didn’t think this was possible since it had been on the charger all night.

I don't have a crank so I tried just to roll it over by hand (SWITCH OFF) and now I have a new problem. It will turn only so far and no more. I tried working the fan back and fourth to loosen it up but it seems like it just stops turning in about the same spot. Put the tractor in gear and tried to roll it to try and move it further but no luck.

Not wanting to do any further harm. What could I have done and where would be the next place to look for a problem.
