Randy - I agree with your assessment - sounds like either the voltage regulator is bad, or it doesn't have a good ground to the tractor frame. Most likely however it's the former... My advice is to buy a new regulator ($35 - $40). But you can try adjusting it yourself. You'll need an accurate (preferrably a digital) voltmeter. To make the adjustment: 1 - Remove the regulator cover and identify the regulator relay - it's the one whose contacts are held closed by spring tension. Take a piece of emery cloth or a small file and lightly clean the contact points. 2 - Connect the voltmeter across the battery terminals. 3 - Now start the engine and run at max RPM. While observing the voltmeter, gently bend the regulator spring hanger to SLIGHTLY increase the spring tension. The voltmeter reading will increase as spring tension increases. Stop when the meter reads 7.2 to 7.4 volts. 4 - With the motor still running at max RPM and lights OFF, check the ammeter - it should read 15 amps or less. If it reads higher, you've tensioned the regulator spring too tight - adjust it back so the ammeter reads 15 amps. Good luck!
