Hi Dick, Your right as I forgot we were working on a F-20. I don't have a book on the F-20 so I can't give you spec's, but for some reason your point gap setting sounds wide. May not be as maybe I'm thinking of some else. I'd recheck your timing as I think thats where you having some problems and the back firing maybe here. Also your carb could be causing the backfire problem too. If it was me I would reclean the carb first just to make sure, then check timing, then recheck point gap. A leaking intake manifold will also cause backfire and you can squirt some oil around the gasket to see if this is the problem as it will quit when the oil fills the gasket void. Last on the list is the valves not opening correct causing backfiring, out of adjustment, bent push rod, stuck lifter, bad valves. Some of the above is generic to all gas engines so don't look for what you don't have. Just for refference the 1500rpm was a temperory setting for timing purpouses only. After the engine is timed correct then rpm is returned to normal. T_Bone
