Mel that problem sounds real familiar! Be patient and keep working the penetrating oil. I twisted one off last year in the same spot. Fortunately it twisted off where the threads begin in the transmission case. So I tapped the first 1 1/2 inches of the transmission lid with a, I believe, 1/2 inch tap and installed a short bolt.
