John; I've had similar problems with my gas 574. If ltc's advice doesn't help, you could need a carb overhaul, and the ignition stuff can look just great and still not be working 100%. If you are running champion plugs, throw them away and get something else. I've had several champions in the last few years that were shorted or grounded right out of the box, and I don't use that brand anymore, get AC, Autolite, Bosch, whatever. Your problem could be a crack in the distributor cap (you can't always see these) or a wire with high resistance. Try misting some water with an old windex bottle on the distributor and wires while its running, if the problem comes back then, you need to change the cap and maybe the wires. Heard from lots of IH mechanics that gas 574s seem to have a lot of this kind of trouble, mine's had more than its share in the last 25 years! Good luck. Denny

Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
