Tetra-ethyl-lead additives first made a showing in the late '30s as an antiknock additive, needed for the higher compression engines then being produced. With older tractor motors and their inherent lower compression ratios, they should not need leaded gasoline to function well. They are usually equipped with replacable valve seats and alloy exhaust valves. Newer replacement seats are hard. Hard seats, though usually induction heat treated, were among the first things automotive manufacturers did in the early '70s to enable their engines to be run on unleaded gas. Our old tractors aren't usually worked very hard these days and should run forever on unleaded gas. I do see merits in using higher octane unleaded in motors that have been rebuilt with domed pistons, propane heads, etc. I wonder if all internal carburetor parts are compatible with methanol???
